Beagle Puppy
So You Want a Beagle?
Many think of Beagles as a pack of dogs baying loudly while running after
a fox or rabbit. While these dogs are popular hunting dogs they also make
an excellent choice for a family pet.
This breed has a keen sense of smell and a strong instinct to hunt. It is
a member of the AKC's hound group and comes in two sizes, under thirteen
inches, and thirteen to fifteen inches. The dogs are identical other than
the difference in size. This breed has dark eyes, droopy ears, and a long
tail. The coat is short and most commonly comes in a combination of tan,
black and white colors. It can also be found as orange, black or tan dogs
with white markings.
Beagles are able to adapt to apartment life but can prove irritating to
neighbors if he constantly warns you of strange noises. These animals are
tireless hunters and often need to burn off energy requiring long walks or
time to play in a park. This animal should not be left to roam unleashed
as it will commonly forget any obedience training while chasing prey.
Beagles do well with children and other dogs, but can be a nuisance to
cats. The breed is playful and affectionate, but will pout if it doesn't
get its own way. They can be quite sensitive and something as simple as
laughing at the animal when it has gotten into a mishap can lead to the
animal brooding for days. Those who wish to own this animal should warn
their children or visitors to avoid upsetting the dog's delicate
sensibilities.
Although Beagles will forget all training during the chase, it is
important for the animal to learn at least basic commands. This feat will
require patience and hard work. Obedience classes should be considered for
this breed.
Beagles will eat nearly anything they can get too. They are known to
rummage through garbage containers looking for food.
Beagles need to be groomed once a week to alleviate shedding. The nails of
the dog will generally wear down on their own but they should be checked
monthly to see if they need to be clipped.
This breed is generally healthy. Occasionally a Beagle will develop heart
disease or epilepsy. They are also prone to weight issues.
Those looking for a happy, well mannered companion will find a perfect fit
with the Beagle.
