Bichon Frise
So You Want a Bichon Frise?
For dog lovers that suffer from allergies the Bichon Frise is
a good option. This little dog's sole function is to provide
companionship and it does its job very well.
The Bichon Frise is classified as a Non-Sporting breed by the
AKC. The Bichon weighs approximately seven to thirteen pounds
and stands nine to eleven inches tall. These dogs are known
for their thick white coats and alert, cheerful eyes. The tail
is carried proudly over its back.
This breed is a perfect choice for a family dog, as long as
the children are old enough to understand how to handle the
animal properly. Although the Bichon may tolerate rough
treatment it is easily injured. These dogs work well with
older children, as well as other dogs and pets.
This breed is content with apartment or town home life. If a
fenced yard is not available the dog should be taken for a
daily walk around the block to maintain health.
The Bichon Frise should be taught basic obedience commands. If
the dog escapes and heads toward the street is important that
you are able to call it back. These commands can be taught at
home but obedience classes will make the process easier. In
addition, the classes are a good way to teach the dog
socialization skills. This animal is quite intelligent and is
often used as highly trained circus dogs.
This breed is not expensive to feed. It is important to use
dry food in the diet however because small dogs often have
dental problems. If the animal is fed a soft diet brush its
teeth frequently.
This breed requires extensive grooming. The coat will need to
be brushed frequently or it will look like a ratty mop rather
than a beautiful dog. His coat should be cut and shaped at
least monthly. This can become a major expense for those that
are unable to groom the animal at home.
This breed is generally quite healthy and has no common health
problems.
Those searching for a sweet, affectionate animal that doesn't
cause allergy problems will find the Bichon Frise a perfect
addition to the family.
