Doberman Pinscher

Is a Doberman Pinscher Right For You?

Dobermans are a common sight in movies. These animals are portrayed as aggressive dogs with demonic looking eyes. However, most Dobermans are loyal, intelligent pets.

The Doberman is classified in the Working Group by the AKC. The animals were originally used as police dogs and were commonly used in the German military. The sight of a Doberman walking towards them filled people with dread because they are extremely powerful animals.

The Doberman is a square dog and has a powerful chest and bullet shaped head. This breed grows to 55 to 90 pounds and stands 24 to 28 inches tall. Its coat is short black, red, blue, or fawn and has tan markings. This breed occasionally has white spots on the chest. The eyes are almond shaped and dark colored. The tail of this breed is usually docked to prevent accidental breaking.

This breed is not high energy but does have amazing endurance. It should not be housed in an apartment and requires regular exercise. A fenced yard is the best choice for a Doberman. Dobermans enjoy spending time with their owners and prefer to be walked daily.

Most Dobermans do quite well with children and other animals. These dogs are highly trainable and love to please their owner. Puppies should be watched around small children because they could accidentally knock the child over with their excitement.

Dobermans need to be trained from the time of purchase. The animals are highly intelligent and will succumb to problem behaviors if left to their own devices. Puppy classes are a good idea as they will help to train and socialize the puppy while it is young and easy to control.

Dobermans are large and muscular and eat a substantial amount of food. This dog should be fed chow formulated for large breed dogs to ensure it gets the proper nutrition.

Dobermans are prone to hypothyroidism, a hereditary condition known as von Willebrand's disease and can develop heart problems. Dobermans are prone to becoming overweight as they age. Check with a veterinarian to find out about food choices for older animals.

Dobermans are easy to groom. The dog can be brushed weekly to remove dirt and loose hair. Their nails should be checked to ensure they are not getting too long. They rarely need any other grooming.

Dobermans may look like vicious animals but they are sweet, loyal pets around their family. Anyone looking for a dog to protect their home and snuggle with them at night should consider a Doberman.
