Yorkshire Terrier
Should you Buy a Yorkshire Terrier?
Anyone that enjoys small dogs with big attitudes should
consider a Yorkshire Terrier. This dog is certain it is just
as big and bad as the other guy and will not hesitate to take
on a Great Dane. This dog is also loveable and will cuddle
like any other lapdog.
This dog is a member of the AKC's Toy Group. In the show ring
this dog appears to glide across the floor because its long
flowing coat hides its tiny feet. This breed can be as small
as one pound although most breeders do not recommend breeding
dogs this small. When dogs are bred to be this small, health
is often sacrificed. The AKC calls for this breed to be less
than 7 pounds but does not set a minimum required weight.
Yorkies have long hair in silver, black, or blue, with tan
heads and legs. All puppies are born with black and tan
coloring. The breed has dark eyes.
This breed is ideal for apartment life. Like any dog it will
enjoy a fenced yard to play in but doesn't require it. Some
Yorkies do not even go outdoors and are litter trained
instead. If the dog is not walked daily it must have some
other sort of exercise such as playing fetch. It is important
that there are no gaps between a fence and the ground as this
breed loves to explore. Since the animals are so small and
cute they don't always have a chance to return home before
someone takes the dog home thinking it is lost or abandoned.
This breed is social and loves being in the midst of family
life. Homes with toddlers should not purchase this breed
because the dogs are delicate and can easily be injured. A
Yorkie with a good temperament will allow children to squeeze
poke and pull on it and it is unfair to subject a small dog to
that treatment.

This dog should be taken to obedience classes as it has a
tendency to become stubborn. Obedience training may very well
save the dog's life if you are able to call it back if it
escapes.
This breed suffers few serious health problems. It does have
dental issues such as retained baby teeth. This breed can also
suffer from hernia or hypoglycemia.
This breed doesn't eat much and shouldn't be spoiled with soft
food. Dry food is important to keep the dog's teeth in good
health.
Yorkies should be groomed three times a week to keep their
hair from matting. Dogs with silky coats may only require
weekly grooming. The dog's teeth should be brushed several
times a week to alleviate dental problems.
Anyone looking for a small dog with a lot of spunk should
consider a Yorkshire Terrier.
